Eventually when I post my online dating profile, under "interests" it shall include among other things, yeast. Also by then I'll be the owner of a German bakery named "Gluten Tag!" I actually know zero, zilch, nada about German baked goods so it could just be a big FAIL all around.
My first attempt at bread was Alice Waters' recipe for herb flat bread. Two lonely Friday nights later I had nothing to show for it but a flat, pale, dense slab of dry, flavorless product. So I gave up on trying again. Who likes flatbread anyways? Not me!
Advertised as "No-Knead Dinner Rolls" I thought this might be worthy of an attempt. 2 runs to the grocery store and 10 hours later, TA-DA! Burnt dinner rolls. I actually tried this recipe again for Turkey Day and they turned out pretty good (and not burned). Thomas K. says the key to making any dish wonderful is repetition and practice. He should be a piano teacher, they have the same mantra.
The perfect way to avoid writing a 15-page paper is to suddenly make it your mission to make cinnamon bread. I was just happy the yeast cooperated and made the dough rise significantly. I wasn't all that impressed with the flavors. I also realized that maybe I don't like bread all that much.
I think I've watched too many Nancy Meyers movies. All the divorced woman in her films are lonely but own lovely bakeries. Thus I've created a similar late 50's fantasy scenario for myself. More bread to come.
