Urban Foraging

In the battle of San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers Market vs. New York Union Square Greenmarket...I'm still a bit biased. Sorry. I will give major props for the diverse produce they are able to shuttle onto this small little island. However, I gotta say the California produce can't be beat. A yellow peach at the Greenmarket is 3/4 the size of the ones I'm used to. They did carry all the essentials, onions, herbs and a variety of greens. Blueberries, raspberries and blackberries were wildly abundant but again half the size of what I'm used to. Well bigger isn't always better right?

I saw a few stands that sold wines, which I thought was pretty cool. I don't know if that would ever work at the SF market. SF food snobs are snotty to begin with, throw in a wine "connoisseur" and you have the most annoying place on the face of the earth. There was one stand that sold the most amazing assortment of peppers. One pepper was actually so pale it looked almost flesh colored.

Admittedly the crowds of people and unfamiliarity of the produce was overwhelming. I did buy a few things, but in the end also went to Whole Foods (ugh, I know) and supplemented with some stuff imported from the West Coast. I guess there is something to be said about chains, it's probably one of the few places I've been to this week where I didn't feel completely lost or out of control. I suppose that's worth a bag of cherries @ $7/lb.

Wandered over to Brooklyn today and scored a sweet cup of New Orleans iced coffee from Blue Bottle...nothing beats a taste of home (even if the view is different).
