Looking for a shortcut

Been reading a lot of articles about nutrition and obesity lately. In case there was any confusion, obesity is a growing epidemic (as every journal article opens with some variation of that point). So what's a fatty to do? Cut down on processed foods? Limit sugary beverage intake? Exercise excessively? These messages get played over and over again like a broken record. While the scientific community is in general consensus about healthy dieting, as a general population we are still always looking for exceptions and shortcuts to the rule. During the hot summer days we want to look cute in a bathing suit but also eat fried chicken on the beach (sounds awesome right?). If only there was a way to enjoy salty, fatty, delicious food and not be obese.

I’m not a policy wonk but the wheels in my little head have been turning. I follow FDA Recalls on Twitter. Which BTW is probably the most depressing feed to follow as there is always something in the food supply that is silently killing someone. Since all the food is tainted (botulism anyone?), maybe we should just let it be. If people get sick off the stuff they’ll be less likely to eat it. Everyone has a food they can’t eat anymore because of some horrible vomit story. For me it’s con queso cheese with tortilla chips. I had it for lunch in Jr. High, took a test on state capitals, and then excused myself to the bathroom to yack it all up. Oddly enough I can’t remember any state capitals, but I can vividly recall the taste of nacho vom. Thanks public school cafeteria, you just cut processed cheese out of my life for good!

So let’s de-regulate food safety, people will get super sick and not want to eat and voila a skinny population. Impressive for just 1-year of grad school huh?
